Age: 36

Hometown: New York

Education: Bachelor Degree in Sports Communications and Sports Management, University of Michigan; Master in Business Administration, Fordham University.

Occupation: Partner, Family Investment Office

Why  I joined SACH: I joined SACH because I believe this organization represents what Israel is all about: using technology, medicine, and generosity to help children in need who do not have access to be helped locally, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or economic means.  It is amazing to see the children who are saved by SACH doctors and it is important for the world to take notice of this humanitarian effort on behalf of everyone involved.  Furthermore, the SACH leadership in New York inspired me to get involved because of how passionate they are and how hard they work.

Help Save Sudanese Refugee at SACH!

The SACH Young Leadership needs your help! During the month of June, we are trying to raise the $10,000 necessary to pay for Bentiyu Man’s surgery. Read about her story and find out what you can do to make a difference!

image

Bentiyu is a sweet 7 year old girl from Sudan who was admitted to the Wolfson Medical Center on May 7, 2013 for evaluation and repair of her congenital heart defect. She is very affectionate, smiling at everyone she meets and always wanting to receive hugs.

image

Bentiyu lives in a shelter for refugees near Haifa in the north of Israel, with her mother and two younger siblings. The director of the shelter saw something was wrong with Bentiyu and tried to help her, by taking her to a hospital in Haifa where she underwent a small procedure and by administering oxygen every night, but to repair the two holes in her heart, she needed open heart surgery. She desperately tried to find help, until finally a friend made the connection with Save a Child’s Heart. At her first check-up, Bentiyu was immediately admitted to the Wolfson Medical Center to undergo lifesaving heart surgery.

image

For the first few years of her life Bentiyu was unable to speak. Her parents grew worried and took her to see a doctor who told them that among other possible conditions, there was something wrong with her heart. Now, even though she is seven years old, Bentiyu is only able to say a few words, and will only speak if someone else initiates the conversation.

image

Because of her heart condition Bentiyu cannot run or do any physical activity. She is able to walk, but gets tired easily because she has difficulty breathing. Very often Bentiyu has to be on oxygen so that she can breathe. In addition, her physical development has been delayed. Bentiyu is currently not allowed to go to school because at school they cannot control all her activities and her mother does not want her to be at risk. However, Bentiyu loves to play with dolls, stuffed animals, and legos. But even more than toys, Bentiyu loves to use her imagination and can be seen playing by herself without toys for hours.

image

Congenital Heart Disease is a type of defect or malformation in one or more structures of the heart or blood vessels that occurs before birth. Congenital heart disease is responsible for more deaths in the first year of life than any other birth defects.

image

On May 12 Bentiyu underwent surgery performed by Dr. Lior Sasson. After a short recovery period in the ICU, Bentiyu was taken to the children’s ward, where she is now waiting to be healthy and strong enough to return back to the shelter.

Bentiyu surgery has still not been funded. If you would like to help us in our mission to cover the cost of her medical treatment, please consider making a donation here.  Every penny helps - and will go directly to her surgery fund.

Thank you for your continued support!

The Jewish Week Recognizes SACH!

The Young Leadership Group’s Executive Board is pleased to announce that President Michael Littenberg-Brown and Vice President Melissa Jane Kronfeld were listed by The Jewish Week on their annual “36 Under 36” List for 2013!

image

By Heather Robinson

Michael Littenberg-Brown is a staunch Democrat, and Melissa Jane Kronfeld is an avowed Republican. But when it comes to supporting Save a Child’s Heart (SACH), a charity that enables Israeli doctors to perform life-saving heart surgeries, the friends stand united.

image

“We get past the labels and arguments,” said Kronfeld, whose nickname is MJ. “Our work with SACH transcends that.”

“In a sense, the more we disagree, the more valuable it is, because it means people from almost any perspective can support this cause,” said Littenberg-Brown.

Littenberg-Brown works as a senior development officer for OneVoice, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering connection between moderates on both sides of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. In 2009, after encountering SACH’s parent organization in the Israeli town of Holon on a Birthright Israel trip, he started New York SACH young leadership.

In Holon, doctors perform surgeries pro bono for SACH. The organization also runs a clinic where up to 20 children can stay for as long as three months at a time while they are recovering. In all, SACH’s doctors have performed over 3,000 life-saving surgeries on children. Forty percent of recipients have been African, 50 percent Palestinian, and the remainder hailed from elsewhere in the Arab world. SACH doctors also travel to train other medical professionals.

“You have Israeli doctors traveling the world to save children regardless of who they are,” said Littenberg-Brown. “There are so many ways this reflects our Jewish values.”

Although he spearheaded SACH young leadership in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, Littenberg-Brown credits Kronfeld with mobilizing a critical mass of young leaders to turn out for events in New York.

image

Last year, the group raised $100,000, providing heart surgery to 10 children. This year’s fundraising goal is $200,000.

Kronfeld, a former New York Post reporter, teaches American foreign policy and national security at Rutgers, where she is pursuing a Ph.D. in global affairs. She stressed the unique events SACH young leadership has held for young professionals, such as a comedy night and a group outing to help Hurricane Sandy victims with cleanup in the Far Rockaways.

“It’s about inspiring people to do philanthropy, hands-on,” she said.

SACH Celebrates Israel in New York!

For the second year in a row, the Save A Child’s Heart Young Leadership Group joined the festivities in New York to Celebrate Israel!

image

In the early morning, Ari Herman, Stuart Smolar and daughter Kelly Smolar Gene - members of the SACH marathon team - took on the Celebrate Israel run! Kelly tells us, “the Israel race was amazing! It was a hot day but there were so many people in support of Israel.

image

“They started with Hatikvah and the National Anthem and the rest was good old running.  Families ran together and we were no exception with our “family” joined our run.

image

“My siblings, Alison Schimel, Lauren Berkowitz Smolar, George Smolar and family friend Jack Kallus all completed their first races! Then we went off to the parade and the SACH festivities celebrating our wonderful organization and Israel!”

image

Meanwhile, SACH YLG members gathered on the east side along the parade route to hand out SACH bracelets, flyers and Kosher candy for kids!

image

image

image

The hot afternoon was followed by cold drinks and lots of fun at the official SACH after party at Bounce Sports Lounge on Second Avenue.

image

About fifty SACH team members, volunteers, and new supporters came out to enjoy delicious food, drink specials, love and laughter!

Notes From the Field: Uganda

My first involvement with Save A Child’s Heart was on my pediatric rotation during my third year at Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv. For my pediatric clerkship, I was assigned to be at Wolfson Hospital in Holon for two months. While we were taught the basics of pediatric medicine, we had the unique privilege of seeing the children who had come to Israel for heart surgery. I learned what the typical “harsh holosystolic murmur” sounds like, concerning a child with a Ventricular Septal Defect of the Heart. Playing with children from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia was an added bonus to the education I received.

However, when I finished medical school, I was almost certain that I would never see the SACH patients again.

Now I am in my second year of residency in radiology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. During my limited vacation time, I traveled to Uganda to visit a friend and volunteer at a large public hospital in Kampala. I also contacted several families of children that had been treated in Israel by SACH. Four families decided to meet me at the hospital.

image

We had several hours to reminisce about how they must cope with their life-altering diseases. I was also able to medically examine them. First and foremost, I am happy to report that all four children are healthy and doing very well. They play with other children, have no physical limitations, and follow up with their doctors in Uganda on a regular basis.

There were a few themes I observed regarding what each parent had remembered about their time in Israel. The most important thing to them was the care they received from the volunteers. Several parents are still in touch via email with volunteers that took care of their children. “I felt like I didn’t have a sick child,” was one parent’s remark regarding how great they were taken care of.

Additionally, all the parents had very fond memories of Israel. Harvey Mwesigwa’s mother, who had spent approximately 6 months in Israel as Harvey recovered from surgery as an infant, was all too familiar with the cultural niceties of Tel Aviv. She told me about her times jogging on the Tel Aviv Tayelet, spending evenings at the old Jaffa city and going to the Cinemateque in Tel Aviv among other memories.

image

Harvey’s story was quite remarkable and got his treatment by happenstance. When he was just one week old, he was seen in Kampala by a Ugandan doctor because he was not growing and his lips were blue (the medical sign of cyanosis).

image

An Israeli cardiologist had been visiting Kampala at the same time and was able to examine Harvey. He decided that Harvey needed urgent surgery, and Save A Child’s Heart was able to set up Visas and flights for Harvey and his mother within two days. They flew back with the Israeli doctor and Harvey’s surgery was scheduled later that week.

image

It was a truly extraordinary accomplishment - how rapidly SACH was able to positively impact a child and his family.

Another girl, Clarice Nabagesera, was the oldest of the children I met.

image

She was born with a ventricular septal defect - the very same heart anomaly I learned about while listening to the hearts of other SACH patients.

image

As soon as I put my stethoscope up to her chest, I could still hear the residual heart murmur that she will have for the rest of her life, even though she is healthy.

Perhaps the most touching part of meeting the former patients was one 3 year old girl, Maria Tendo.

image

Her father Francio had coped with the hardships of taking care of an ill child. While dealing with all the difficulties of his daughter’s illness, he somehow found time to work with a local NGO, the Child and Elderly Support Organization.

image

The organization functions to help children and elderly that don’t have access to basic fundamental needs of life. Although the people they assist have medical issues that are handled by doctors, the other aspects of their lives go unnoticed. Francio makes sure that there is access to food, water, shelter, and education not only for the patients, but for their families as well. This was a heartwarming story to behold.

Age: 37

Hometown: Israel

Education: Bachelor of Science, Real Estate; Associate Degree, Business, New York University

Occupation: Real Estate Development

Why I joined SACH: As a native born Israeli, my interest in SACH goes beyond the medical and philanthropic aspects. I feel that nothing can  change the sentiments of people in conflict like putting a personal face on charitable efforts, and nothing could be more personal and life-altering like the work done at Save a Child’s Heart. As a dad, my heart goes out to these suffering little ones and their families. I am honored to serve on the board and will do the best I can to further its goals.

Michael is also a member of the official SACH Marathon Team!

Theory Hearts SACH!

In March, the world renowned House of Fashion, Theory, opened its heart (and home) to the Save A Child’s Heart cause.

image

In the spirit of our 2012 Shop Your Heart Out, the high-end luxury store opened their headquarters on Gansevoort street for an after-hours shopping extravaganza featuring their brand name clothing for men and women.

image

Almost 100 SACH supporters enjoyed cheese and wine while perusing and purchasing the finest in New York’s Spring fashion.

image

The best part of the evening was that 20 percent of all sales went to support life-saving heart surgery for children in need. And over $1,000 was raised to support our medical mission!

image

Extra special thanks to SACH board members Rachel Yemini and and Ashlie Yair for organizing the event.

image

We are so looking forward to teaming up with Theory again in the near future and we thank them for their incredible support!

New York Temple Hosts SACH Mitzvah Day

In May, the SACH team took part in Mitzvah Day at Temple Shaaray Tefila in New York City. We spent the afternoon with local kids from the neighborhood making heart-shaped cards to send to Israel.

image

The cards were filled with color and stickers and messages of well wishes.

image

SACH Young Leadership Board members Amy and Daniel Delson (pictured on the right) - also members of the Temple - brought their two sons, Helix and Samson, who joined the Temple community in their first official SACH event! We look forward to one day welcoming them to the Young Leadership Group!

image

The beautiful cards were hand delivered to the children currently being treated by SACH by YLG Chairman Michael Littenberg-Brown later that month!

SACH Teams Up With Harboring Hearts!

In April, the SACH team was excited to host our second parlor event of 2013.  About 30 guests, board members and new volunteers were welcomed to the midtown Manhattan home of our YLG Vice President Melissa Jane Kronfeld, where they noshed on fantastic food and enjoyed wine and other refreshments.

image

The team was also excited to introduce SACH supporters to Michelle Javian, founder and President of Harboring Hearts, a New York based organization that provides housing for patients undergoing critical heart surgery.

image

Michelle shared her experiences working with, and building networks in, the field of heart care. And she provided details for our guests on an upcoming day of service (that will take place on Wednesday, June 12 from 2 pm to 4 pm) in which SACH team members will join forces with Harboring Hearts to provide an afternoon of laughter and joy for children currently seeking treatment at a local Manhattan hospital.

**For more information on getting involved in this fantastic opportunity - please email us at YLG@SaveAChildsHeart.com**

image

We finished up the evening with a presentation by our very own Dr. Jon Zember on the type of critical care that SACH provides children in need from the developing world at the Wolfson Medical Center in Israel.

image

All in all, a wonderful and informative time was had by everyone in attendance. The entire SACH team would like to thank Michelle and her staff for making the time and including us in her amazing work. We would also like to thank everyone who came out to support us in our efforts to build bridges between SACH and other organizations in our local communities.

We look forward to seeing you on June 12! In the meantime, check out all the photos from the event on our Facebook page!

SEE SACH RUN!

There is no off season for the SACH marathon team, who are running races around the world while representing our amazing organization!

Marathon team members Kelly Smolar and Ari Herman recently took on Washington, D.C.

Ari told us, “it started out as a very cold run, but quickly transformed into a very inspiring run.  I have never experienced anything that can compare to the sight and feeling I got when I left the park, came onto the avenue and just saw a sea of runners.  Definitely gave me the second wind I needed.

“Personally,” Ari added, “it was exceptional being able to hit two goals of mine: First, running with the best running partners anyone could ask for and second, finishing a half marathon in under two hours.”

Kelly chimed in, “at this famous race we met a lot of cool people and wore some pretty snazzy [SACH] tanks. Not to mention the amazing cupcakes when we crossed the finish line!”

image

Way to go Ari and Kelly!

Meanwhile - on the other side of the world - marathon team member Omri Ariav ran a race in Israel.

Omri tell us, “after hurricane Sandy cancelled New York marathon, I decided not to give up on representing SACH on a run. I tried setting up an independent run from Raanana to the SACH house at Holon, but the recent military operations made it difficult.

“Then I tried doing the Teveria Marathon in January, but I caught the flu. Even the Tel Aviv marathon in March was cancelled to due severe weather! But lucky for me, the organizers of the Israeli Ultraman Competition decided to produce an independent Tel Aviv marathon. I ran the 42.2 km in 4:52 hours,” he told us.

“Raising money for SACH while fulfilling my dream to complete a marathon run was one the best experiences of my life,” Omri added. “But I can’t wait to get back to New York to run the marathon with the entire team!”

image

Talk about commitment! Great job Omri!

We can’t wait to see all our runners cross the finish line at the 2013 New York Marathon! Until then… run SACHers, run!

New York Young Leader Visits SACH-Israel

Since my year in Israel, I have traveled back once a year, every year and each experience of return brings with it new observations, new ideas and new sites. Every time I go back I try to visit some place I’ve never been, somewhere I can  connect with yet another aspect of multi-faceted Israeli society.

My first visit to the SACH house outside Tel Aviv was two summers ago. My group stayed for about an hour and we played with the children and made some art and crafts.

image

At that time, I had hosted a fundraiser for SACH in my house and I felt so privileged to finally be able to meet the children and the staff. I knew that when I returned this year, I needed to see the new SACH home and to have a chance to spend even more time with the kids.

image

When my friend and I arrived for a short one-night stay, I could not have imagined how quickly we would connect with the children. They were mostly from Zanzibar and Romania, where I have my own family roots. Without one word in common, we played as a little girl from Romania, who taught me how to count to ten and laughed at my pronunciation. Her giggles didn’t stop and by the end of the first day, I had forgotten that neither of us were able to communicate with words.

image

This happened again and again as I played with each of the kids, building fast relationships by as they tapped my iPhone’s piano app with their little fingers. Even though it was just two days, spending time with the children was so inspiring and really gave me the drive to work as hard as I could to raise money and awareness for the cause.

Arkansan takes hearts of Benton County women to Israel

By BECCA MARTIN-BROWN

January 17, 2013

A project that touched the heart of an Arkansan in Israel stretched around the world to Bentonville and back at Christmastime.

Benton County Republican Women donated $1,000 and “a phenomenal” number of crayons, coloring books, markers and more to Save A Child’s Heart, according to Leigh Nogy, president of the local organization. The charity, based in Israel, treats children with heart ailments from all over the world.

The charity came to the attention of the local group because Princella Smith, a Republican activist from Wynne, is studying in Israel. Invited to speak to the women’s group during a visit home, she shared her passion for Save A Child’s Heart.

Smith was teaching English in China when she discovered the humanitarian organization, she explained.

Save A Child’s Heart rewarded her interest by naming her an ambassador during her China sojourn.

Then Smith, a political science graduate of Ouachita Baptist University, went to Herzliya, Israel, to study counter terrorism.

“I wanted to get that particular degree,” she said, “and I wanted to go to the Middle East. I’ve always had an interest in foreign relations, and I went to Turkey twice in 2010.

To me, the best way to learn about a country is to immerse yourself in it. And I’ve always had a place in my heart for Israel; it’s a haven for democracy in the Middle East.”

Once connected with Save A Child’s Heart, Smith visited the children’s home where youngsters wait for surgery and recover afterward. Many of them can’t run and play, she said, because of their ailments.

“They try to keep them as active as they can be - they’re kids! But without being able to move around much, it makes it a little challenging,” she explained. “So one of the things they like to do is arts and crafts.

“When I was at the children’s home, one little kid in particular kept following me around with a marker and a coloring book, and I finally figured out he wanted me to color with him. It’s the best thing in the world if you sit down and color with them.

They get the biggest smiles on their faces!”

Smith was inspired to collect art supplies for the youngsters and set out on what she dubbed “Crayons for Christmas.” She sought out Agape Church of Little Rock to serve as the Arkansas hub for crayon collection.

“Agape Church has been wonderful,” she said. “They have several international ministries, and when I called their associate minister, Cathie Dorsch, to ask for their help, she immediately launched into action.

The Agape Church staff has counted every single crayon that has come to their church. They have really kept up the excitement on the ground in Arkansas for this project.”

Smith set a goal of collecting 3,000 crayons, symbolic of the 3,000 lives that have been saved by the Israeli organization. She has collected more than 20,000, she said, 4,300 of them courtesy of the Benton County Republican Women.

“When you ask people for money, they think they don’t have enough to make a difference,” Smith said, “whereas if you give them something to buy, canned food, crayons, blankets or shoes, it becomes easy.”

Nogy, president of the Benton County Republican Women, said the response was “amazing.”

“Every year, we have a Christmas luncheon with other Republican women’s groups in the area - this year, it was with the Bentonville women - and I’ve been following Princella Smith on Facebook for quite awhile,” she said. “She’s done all kinds of interesting things, and when we invited her to speak, she asked if we’d be interesting in sponsoring her crayon drive. She was inspiring.”

The women’s organization also gave $1,400 to Honor Flight Network, a nonprofit organization that takes veterans to Washington, D.C.

Meanwhile, Smith is back in Israel, waiting for a visit from Cathie Dorsch for “Crayon Day,” which they’ll host together at the Save A Child’s Heart children’s home, the hospital where children are treated and at another facility that specifically cares for children from Iraq and Afghanistan.

“It is overwhelming to see a community so removed from Israel come together to provide this necessity for our children’s home and such a simple source of happiness for our heart patients,” Randi Weiss, leadership director for Save A Child’s Heart, said.

“We are grateful to the people of Arkansas for making this holiday season brighter for our kids.”

Smith said while she “hates to go back to money,” she would ask donors interested in giving now to visit the Save A Child’s Heart website at saveachildsheart.org.

“I want to use the attention we’ve generated with the crayons to try to bring in more funds for the organization,” she said. “For every heart surgery, it takes like $10,000, and the more money we get, the more surgeries they can do.”
