Theory Hearts SACH!

In March, the world renowned House of Fashion, Theory, opened its heart (and home) to the Save A Child’s Heart cause.

In the spirit of our 2012 Shop Your Heart Out, the high-end luxury store opened their headquarters on Gansevoort street for an after-hours shopping extravaganza featuring their brand name clothing for men and women.

Almost 100 SACH supporters enjoyed cheese and wine while perusing and purchasing the finest in New York’s Spring fashion.

The best part of the evening was that 20 percent of all sales went to support life-saving heart surgery for children in need. And over $1,000 was raised to support our medical mission!

Extra special thanks to SACH board members Rachel Yemini and and Aslie Yair for organizing the event.

We are so looking forward to teaming up with Theory again in the near future and we thank them for their incredible support!

New York Temple Hosts SACH Mitzvah Day

In May, the SACH team took part in Mitzvah Day at Temple Shaaray Tefila in New York City. We spent the afternoon with local kids from the neighborhood making heart-shaped cards to send to Israel.

The cards were filled with color and stickers and messages of well wishes. These beautiful cards will be hand delivered to the children currently being treated by SACH in just two weeks!

SACH Young Leadership Board members Amy and Daniel Delson (pictured on the right) - also members of the Temple - brought their two sons, Helix and Samson, who joined the Temple community in their first official SACH event! We look forward to one day welcoming them to the Young Leadership Group!

SACH Teams Up With Harboring Hearts!

In April, the SACH team was excited to host our second parlor event of 2013. About 30 guests, board members and new volunteers were welcomed to the midtown Manhattan home of our YLG Vice President Melissa Jane Kronfeld, where they noshed on fantastic food and enjoyed wine and other refreshments.

The team was also excited to introduce SACH supporters to Michelle Javian, founder and President of Harboring Hearts, a New York based organization that provides housing for patients undergoing critical heart surgery.

Michelle shared her experiences working with, and building networks in, the field of heart care. And she provided details for our guests on an upcoming day of service (that will take place on Wednesday, June 12 from 2 pm to 4 pm) in which SACH team members will join forces with Harboring Hearts to provide an afternoon of laughter and joy for children currently seeking treatment at a local Manhattan hospital.

We finished up the evening with a presentation by our very own Dr. Jon Zember on the type of critical care that SACH provides children in need from the developing world at the Wolfson Medical Center in Israel.

All in all, a wonderful and informative time was had by everyone in attendance. The entire SACH team would like to thank Michelle and her staff for making the time and including us in her amazing work. We would also like to thank everyone who came out to support us in our efforts to build bridges between SACH and other organizations in our local communities.

SEE SACH RUN!

There is no off season for the SACH marathon team, who are running races around the world while representing our amazing organization!

Marathon team members Kelly Smolar and Ari Herman recently took on Washington, D.C.

Ari told us, “it started out as a very cold run, but quickly transformed into a very inspiring run. I have never experienced anything that can compare to the sight and feeling I got when I left the park, came onto the avenue and just saw a sea of runners. Definitely gave me the second wind I needed.

“Personally,” Ari added, “it was exceptional being able to hit two goals of mine: First, running with the best running partners anyone could ask for and second, finishing a half marathon in under two hours.”

Kelly chimed in, “at this famous race we met a lot of cool people and wore some pretty snazzy [SACH] tanks. Not to mention the amazing cupcakes when we crossed the finish line!”

Way to go Ari and Kelly!

Meanwhile - on the other side of the world - marathon team member Omri Ariav ran a race in Israel.

Omri tell us, “after hurricane Sandy cancelled New York marathon, I decided not to give up on representing SACH on a run. I tried setting up an independent run from Raanana to the SACH house at Holon, but the recent military operations made it difficult.

“Then I tried doing the Teveria Marathon in January, but I caught the flu. Even the Tel Aviv marathon in March was cancelled to due severe weather! But lucky for me, the organizers of the Israeli Ultraman Competition decided to produce an independent Tel Aviv marathon. I ran the 42.2 km in 4:52 hours,” he told us.

“Raising money for SACH while fulfilling my dream to complete a marathon run was one the best experiences of my life,” Omri added. “But I can’t wait to get back to New York to run the marathon with the entire team!”

Talk about commitment! Great job Omri!

We can’t wait to see all our runners cross the finish line at the 2013 New York Marathon! Until then… run SACHers, run!

New York Young Leader Visits SACH-Israel

Since my year in Israel, I have traveled back once a year, every year and each experience of return brings with it new observations, new ideas and new sites. Every time I go back I try to visit some place I’ve never been, somewhere I can connect with yet another aspect of multi-faceted Israeli society.

My first visit to the SACH house outside Tel Aviv was two summers ago. My group stayed for about an hour and we played with the children and made some art and crafts.

At that time, I had hosted a fundraiser for SACH in my house and I felt so privileged to finally be able to meet the children and the staff. I knew that when I returned this year, I needed to see the new SACH home and to have a chance to spend even more time with the kids.

When my friend and I arrived for a short one-night stay, I could not have imagined how quickly we would connect with the children. They were mostly from Zanzibar and Romania, where I have my own family roots. Without one word in common, we played as a little girl from Romania, who taught me how to count to ten and laughed at my pronunciation. Her giggles didn’t stop and by the end of the first day, I had forgotten that neither of us were able to communicate with words.

This happened again and again as I played with each of the kids, building fast relationships by as they tapped my iPhone’s piano app with their little fingers. Even though it was just two days, spending time with the children was so inspiring and really gave me the drive to work as hard as I could to raise money and awareness for the cause.

SACH Melt's Your Heart Out!

On February 11, New Yorkers from all boroughs came out for the sweetest affair of the season!

The SACH chocolate extravaganza was hosted by new SACH young professional members to support the International Give Your Heart Out campaign.

‘Melt Your Heart Out’ took place in the hip Lower East Side featuring an exquisite chocolate fountain with delicious snacks for an ultimate fondue experience.

Candy and strawberries were dipped while sweet chocolate roses were purchased by the dozens! Delicious drinks were sipped all night and love was most certainty in the air!

Arkansan takes hearts of Benton County women to Israel

A project that touched the heart of an Arkansan in Israel stretched around the world to Bentonville and back at Christmastime.

Benton County Republican Women donated $1,000 and “a phenomenal” number of crayons, coloring books, markers and more to Save A Child’s Heart, according to Leigh Nogy, president of the local organization. The charity, based in Israel, treats children with heart ailments from all over the world.

The charity came to the attention of the local group because Princella Smith, a Republican activist from Wynne, is studying in Israel. Invited to speak to the women’s group during a visit home, she shared her passion for Save A Child’s Heart.

Smith was teaching English in China when she discovered the humanitarian organization, she explained.

Save A Child’s Heart rewarded her interest by naming her an ambassador during her China sojourn.

Then Smith, a political science graduate of Ouachita Baptist University, went to Herzliya, Israel, to study counter terrorism.

“I wanted to get that particular degree,” she said, “and I wanted to go to the Middle East. I’ve always had an interest in foreign relations, and I went to Turkey twice in 2010.

To me, the best way to learn about a country is to immerse yourself in it. And I’ve always had a place in my heart for Israel; it’s a haven for democracy in the Middle East.”

Once connected with Save A Child’s Heart, Smith visited the children’s home where youngsters wait for surgery and recover afterward. Many of them can’t run and play, she said, because of their ailments.

“They try to keep them as active as they can be - they’re kids! But without being able to move around much, it makes it a little challenging,” she explained. “So one of the things they like to do is arts and crafts.

“When I was at the children’s home, one little kid in particular kept following me around with a marker and a coloring book, and I finally figured out he wanted me to color with him. It’s the best thing in the world if you sit down and color with them.

They get the biggest smiles on their faces!”

Smith was inspired to collect art supplies for the youngsters and set out on what she dubbed “Crayons for Christmas.” She sought out Agape Church of Little Rock to serve as the Arkansas hub for crayon collection.

“Agape Church has been wonderful,” she said. “They have several international ministries, and when I called their associate minister, Cathie Dorsch, to ask for their help, she immediately launched into action.

The Agape Church staff has counted every single crayon that has come to their church. They have really kept up the excitement on the ground in Arkansas for this project.”

Smith set a goal of collecting 3,000 crayons, symbolic of the 3,000 lives that have been saved by the Israeli organization. She has collected more than 20,000, she said, 4,300 of them courtesy of the Benton County Republican Women.

“When you ask people for money, they think they don’t have enough to make a difference,” Smith said, “whereas if you give them something to buy, canned food, crayons, blankets or shoes, it becomes easy.”

Nogy, president of the Benton County Republican Women, said the response was “amazing.”

“Every year, we have a Christmas luncheon with other Republican women’s groups in the area - this year, it was with the Bentonville women - and I’ve been following Princella Smith on Facebook for quite awhile,” she said. “She’s done all kinds of interesting things, and when we invited her to speak, she asked if we’d be interesting in sponsoring her crayon drive. She was inspiring.”

The women’s organization also gave $1,400 to Honor Flight Network, a nonprofit organization that takes veterans to Washington, D.C.

Meanwhile, Smith is back in Israel, waiting for a visit from Cathie Dorsch for “Crayon Day,” which they’ll host together at the Save A Child’s Heart children’s home, the hospital where children are treated and at another facility that specifically cares for children from Iraq and Afghanistan.

“It is overwhelming to see a community so removed from Israel come together to provide this necessity for our children’s home and such a simple source of happiness for our heart patients,” Randi Weiss, leadership director for Save A Child’s Heart, said.

“We are grateful to the people of Arkansas for making this holiday season brighter for our kids.”

Smith said while she “hates to go back to money,” she would ask donors interested in giving now to visit the Save A Child’s Heart website at saveachildsheart.org.

“I want to use the attention we’ve generated with the crayons to try to bring in more funds for the organization,” she said. “For every heart surgery, it takes like $10,000, and the more money we get, the more surgeries they can do.”

A Million Shekel Success!

On January 21, the SACH YLG Executive Board was excited to join the Give Your Heart Out festivities world wide, in honor of the Israeli government’s recent donation of one million shekels to the SACH hospital in Israel.

Around 100 volunteers, friends, family and supporters joined the SACH team during the course of this fantastic evening.

Guests enjoyed an open bar and Israeli inspired cuisine all night long, courtesy of the Executive Board.

And everyone had a chance to hear about what we have accomplished in the past year as well as what we have planned for the coming one.

Suffice to say, a great time was had by all in attendance!

We would like to thank all our friends and donors who came out celebrate this important milestone with us, and we look forward to seeing you at our next event!

SACH-U Celebrates Valentine's Day!

On Valentine’s Day over 700 college students from the greater New York area gathered in support of SACH for a fun-filled evening of cocktails and candy!

Complete with raffles, a Photobooth and a date auction, the 3rd annual SACH-U Valentine’s Benefit was a love-ly success!

And the best part is that together, we raised enough to save the lives of two children in need of life-saving heart surgery!

Now that is what we call a very Happy SACH Valentine’s Day!

SACH-Boston Brings the Love to Beantown!

On February 11, Boston braved the aftermath of an enormous snowstorm to bid on the city’s finest women… all in order to Save a Child’s Heart!

The Valentine’s Day party — ‘Save a Heart, Find a Date’ — featured love-themed drink specials and appetizers to warm up participants and supporters during the rousing live auction.

Each fantastic femme was auctioned off along with a fun date around Beantown, including brunch tickets, museum tickets, pottery making and much, much more!

SACH Hosts First Parlor Event of 2013!

In January, the SACH YLG Executive Board held our first parlor event of 2013. And we were honored to host Dara McLeod, Communications Director of Refugees International - the world’s leading refugee advocacy organization.

More then 30 SACH members, volunteers, and new friends gathered at the home of YLG Executive Board Vice President Melissa Jane Kronfeld, where they enjoyed fantastic food, refreshments and conversation.

Dara spoke about Refugees International and her work on the ground in some of the world’s worst regions - some of which the children that are saved at the SACH hospital hail from. Check out video from the event HERE!

Dara discussed the depth and nature of the struggle faced by refugees. And we watched a short film she shot on the ground in camps around the world.

The entire SACH team is very grateful for the opportunity to host a woman who makes such an important impact on the world! Thanks again, Dara!
